8:11-20
Do not forget the Lord your God.
How do we forget? By not keeping His commandments, statutes,
and ordinances.
What is the result of forgetting? The result of forgetting God
is a process. First, after our goods are multiplied and our life gets easy, we
become proud of ourselves and forget what God has done for us. Then, on top of self-pride,
we bring in false gods into our lives. Then, we perish.
8:18 But you shall remember the Lord your God, for it is He
who is giving you power to make wealth… 19 It shall come about if you ever
forget the Lord your God and go after other gods and serve them and worship
them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish.
Many times in these first chapters of Deuteronomy, we discover
the importance of remembering God and all that He has done for us and His
provisions and blessings. This reminds us that, contrary to popular cultural
beliefs, we cannot make it on our own. God seems to desire our trust before
He delivers His blessings (8:16, 17).
Only when we allow ourselves to become fully reliant on God,
do we find His fullest of blessings.
Psalms 103:2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, And forget none of
His benefits;
Psalms 112:6-7 For he will never be shaken; The righteous
will be remembered forever. He will not fear evil tidings; His heart is
steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
