Numbers 3-4 – February 23, 2021

Just from my own logic, I figured that taking a census for military reasons probably has a few desired purposes.

1 – Who are you able to call on?

2 – How many are you able to call on? (determine strength)

(btw 603,550 fighting age men on his first census)

3 – What provisions will you need when you call on them? (What do you need to keep

        your strength alive and thriving)

Then I am reminded of Jesus’ words in Luke 14:31-32 Or what king, when he sets out to meet another king in battle, will not first sit down and consider whether he is strong enough with ten thousand men to encounter the one coming against him with twenty thousand? 32 Or else, while the other is still far away, he sends a delegation and asks for terms of peace.

So, Jesus makes the point that a natural king says this, “Depending on our consideration (census) we will know whether we should fight or seek a treaty.”

This analogy is used to declare the seriousness of discipleship with God. Jesus centers the analogy around these statements: (Warning: His words here are not very “seeker friendly”)

27 Whoever does not carry his own cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple.

33 So then, none of you can be My disciple who does not give up all his own possessions.

Jesus said to count the cost of your discipleship. Take a census maybe.

1 – Who are you able to call on?

2 – Determine strength.

3 – What do you need to keep your strength alive and thriving?

and, are you going to fold when your enemy looks bigger?!

Aaaaaaahhhhhhhhh   Just getting you to think about it.
